Installing arpReach

Installing arpReach
I have just gotten around to installing the new arpReach for myself; although it’s been out for about 9 months, I’ve only installed it for clients. This was a fresh install; I still need to upgrade some installations from ARP3 and the time involved in doing that is the main reason I’ve put this off.

Sharing Your Calendar with Non-Daylite Users

Sharing Your Calendar with Non-Daylite Users
Many Daylite users would like to share their Daylite calendar with non-Daylite users; however, Daylite only provides one mechanism for this: an authenticated, CalDAV feed. Presumably Marketcircle did not provide the older iCalendar (iCal) format for two reasons:

  • It’s not authenticated and as such could be a privacy issue.
  • CalDAV is a more recent standard and the future of iCalendar is uncertain.

Learning about PayPal Site Status Updates

PayPal Site Updates
PayPal doesn’t seem to have a proactive mechanism for informing developers of changes to their site. Although I’ve heard of developers receiving notification of bulletins by email, PayPal Merchant Technical Support doesn’t know anything about that.

University of California's New Logo

University of California's New Logo
Mercury News:

The new look, fashioned by an in-house design team, is part of a broader remake of the 10-campus university’s image.

If you want a degree in design, UC is clearly not the school to choose.

Tim Cook's Rock Center Interview

Tim Cook's Rock Center Interview
Tim Cook:

We can only do great things a few times, only on a few products.

On the sites I follow there has been a lot of talk about Tim Cook’s Rock Center interview, but I haven’t seen anyone address his comment above.

Even Apple doesn’t expect to bring out “the next great thing” at every product launch. Why is it that so many others do—and castigate them when they don’t?

Upgrading Daylite from an Older Mac

Upgrading Daylite from an Older Mac
Woo-hoo! Daylite 4.1 has been released, bringing with it a ton of bug fixes and enhancements.

You might, as I did, find yourself upgrading from Daylite 3 to Daylite 4 at the same time you change your Mac that’s running Daylite Server. I’d been using DLS on a PowerMac running Leopard (10.5), but the minimum requirement for DL4 is Lion (10.7), thus the upgrade needed to happen on the new machine.

Daylite Mail Notifications

Daylite Mail Notifications
Some of my clients actually notify me by email when they need my services, rather than calling me on the phone. The trouble is, if I’m out on the road it may be hours before I see the message and that could mean the difference between getting back to them today or next Monday.

Skitch 2.0 is a Disappointment

Skitch 2.0 is a Disappointment
For about 15 months, Skitch has been my “go to” app for taking and annotating static screenshots. I’m not sure why I stopped using LittleSnapper, other than I liked the arrows in Skitch better.

Working with Two Mac Accounts Simultaneously

Share or Log In?
I had no idea it was possible to log in to another Mac while another person is using it. Not file sharing, not screen sharing, but actually logging in to a separate account and controlling the Mac while the other user continues with their work. It’s been available since Lion.

Google Search Enhances Voice Search

Google Search
Google’s Voice Search on their Google Search app is faster than Siri and just as funny:

Apple TV's Special Event Channel

Apple’s special events usually aren’t live-streamed but, even so, I didn’t have the luxury of watching today’s event when it happened. And as I watched the event later in the day, I was annoyed — as I have been by the last few webcasts that I watched after the fact — that I couldn’t pause the stream to answer the phone or just take a break. I ended up closing the window a couple times when I needed to step away from the computer and couldn’t finish watching the ‘cast.
