An Ad-free Twitter

Shawn Blanc, on Twitter providing an ad-free, paid tier:

But I am sure that option will never manifest. Because if Twitter offered an option to upgrade to an ad-free timeline it would hinder the sales of ads. The sheer virtue of the fact that a portion of Twitter’s user base was paying to not see ads would stand as proof that promoted tweets are not a part the ideal “Twitter experience”.

DEVONthink Personal, Pro adds scan feature

If you've put off purchasing DEVONthink, DEVONtechnologies' excellent information manager, because the Personal ($50) and Pro ($80) editions don't offer scan features and Pro Office is just too darned expensive ($150), well, now's the time to buy.

Setting up CalDAV and CardDAV with Daylite

Setting up CalDAV and CardDAV with Daylite
Update: Daylite 4.1 doesn’t appear to work at all with secure connections (SSL) on port 6185. The instructions have been updated to use the non-SSL port 6188 and assume you’re using Daylite 4.1 and iOS 6.

To sync contacts and events to iCal, Address Book and iOS devices, Daylite 4 now uses CalDAV and CardDAV. Syncing to local accounts is no longer supported, since Apple is moving away from Sync Services.

Goodbye 8x8, Hello Line2

Goodbye 8x8, Hello Line2
I just switched my VOIP phone from 8x8 to Line2 today, after a 5+ year stint with 8x8 (previously Packet8). Nothing against 8x8, except that I was looking to save some money and have some integration with my iPhone.

Porting my number to Line2 was easy; however, even though I was told that I’d receive a message when the transfer was scheduled, I’ve received no notification—and the transfer was completed yesterday.

1Password, LaunchBar and Image Smoothing

What do those three things have in common? A default keyboard shorcut that -- when activated -- will have you scratching your head and wondering where to look for the culprit.

How I Avoided a Toll Road Ticket

I don't drive the toll roads very often, so perhaps it's understandable that I blew right past one of two toll plazas on a trip I took yesterday and didn't pay the cash toll. I realized it just as I was coming up on the toll plaza in the FasTrak lanes and I couldn't move over -- and I couldn't go back!

My Favorite 404

There's no excuse for having a boring Page Not Found (404) page on your site. This one has got to be the best one I've ever seen.

iOS Wallet Replacements

iOS Wallet Replacements
Some years ago I stopped wearing a watch, since my cell phone was (nearly) always with me for the purpose of telling time. With apps on my phone, I can also use it as an alarm clock, stop watch and timer.

Daylite 4 Not Ready for Market

Since the first of the year I’ve been managing my business in Daylite by Marketcircle. Even though I’ve owned the software for a number of years, I’ve found it much easier to continue using the home-grown solution I created using 4th Dimension. Unfortunately I’ve also found that I don’t have the time to program that solution with the new features I want or need—like mobile access to my business data.

Freaky Non-Stick Coating

MIT PhD candidate Dave Smith, in Fast Company:

…we estimate that we could save about one million tons of food from being thrown out every year.

Seems like an understatement.

Media Players in Drupal 7

I was tempted to call this “The Sorry State of Media Players in Drupal 7,” but I’m perhaps being too harsh. I probably have different requirements that nobody else has, so that’s why none (as far as I’ve been able to find) work for one of my current projects.
