My New (Free) iPad

A week ago Saturday, while we were visiting my wife’s parents, my sister-in-law was saying how it would really be nice if she had an iPad to help her keep track of her life. Her husband already has one, which he received from his employer for (I believe) winning a sales contest, and my nephew uses another provided by the school district.

On our way home, I got to thinking about giving her my first-gen iPad, particularly since her birthday was coming up the next Friday. But I wasn’t considering purchasing a new iPad until the next model comes out (presumably) in the next six months, so it looked like she was going to have to wait.

Imagine my surprise when I got home to find an email message waiting for me:

I’d like to thank you for the contributions you’ve made. As a token of our appreciation, we’d like to get you an ipad 3, iphone 5 - top of the line.

Which would you prefer?

As my wife said when I told her, “Are you freakin’ kidding me!?”

I won’t get into the details, but I’d been (somewhat unknowingly) helping a company for the last few months and the CEO wanted to show some love for that.

After a few days of back and forth as to the color, carrier and delivery address, and another few days of waiting, FedEx delivered my shiny new iPad today. It was engraved, “A token of our appreciation.”

Thank you very much! (You know who you are.)

So my sister-in-law got an iPad for her birthday, after all.

By the way, I asked for the Verizon model this time around. Now I can go back to shunning AT&T which I’ve been doing for about the last dozen years after those thieves stole from me. Not to mention that the $20/month Verizon plan allows 300% more data than the $15/month AT&T plan. Oh, and that AT&T doesn’t have LTE coverage in my area while Verizon does.
